Letter of the Week: G

What is your prediction? Will Mr. Groundhog see his shadow? Six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Back before we had instruments and technology to track and predict weather patterns, farmers observed the habits of animals to try to figure out when winter was over so they could plant their crops. Farmers in Europe used badgers, hedgehogs, and bears to forecast the coming of spring. The early settlers in North America found the groundhog to be ideal as it wakes from hibernation in February and was easily observed in eastern United States and Canada.

Letter of the Week: D

January 31st marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year celebration (for 2014), welcoming in the year of the horse. Dragons play a big role, which we are going to use to incorporate the letter-sound 'd' into our Lunar New Year theme for the week. The Chinese think of dragons as helpful, friendly creatures. The dragon is linked to good luck, long life, and wisdom.

Letter of the Week: K

Monday, January 20th marks our nation’s annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement he championed. A big, important historical figure. A big, important topic. I don’t think there is an age that is too young to start introducing the man or the movement. I do think both need to be scaled down to be appropriate to the child's developmental level. This week we are going to tackle both in a small way. Sticking with our letter-sound of the week (K), we are going to focus on the idea of ‘kindness’.
