Do you speak AAC?

Once an appropriate AAC system has been chosen through feature matching, we need to provide the same level of immersion, experience and opportunity to AAC users as we do children developing verbal communication. We need to “speak AAC” to users in an immersive fashion for a LONG period of time before we expect any expressive use from the AAC user. We need to provide many meaningful, functional opportunities daily for the AAC user to practice.

Letter of the Week: J

‘J’ is a consonant. From a speech perspective, ‘j’ (as in “jump”) is a fat-pushed air sound. The lips get “fat” and round. The tongue flattens, trapping the air between itself and the roof of the mouth. The air is then released in an explosive wide puff.

‘P’ is a consonant. /p/ is one of the first developing speech sounds. From a speech perspective, ‘p’ is a lip popper. Just as with ‘b’, the lips are doing the work to make this sound.

‘L’ is a consonant. From a speech perspective, ‘l’ is a “lifter” sound. You make /l/ by lifting your tongue to make contact with the gum ridge behind your upper teeth and releasing an airstream over the sides of your tongue.
